Rocks and Stones and Trees

Many large boulders can be seen alongside many of the paths in Balgay Park. These were brought into the park a few years ago and are intended to provide somewhere for visitors to sit.

However, there are also many other smaller stones which can be recognised as coming from the old churches. You will find a stone, shaped by a chisel to fit round a ledge, and another with a hole drilled through it in order to fix it into a long-forgotten position in a church. Walk up the road to the Observatory on the south side and you will find a semi-circle of sculptured stones which perhaps once surrounded a seat and a viewpoint. Beside the Bandstand on the south side guarding the entrance to the cemetery is a large square-shaped sculptured stone, which perhaps once supported a pillar, or was itself the top of a pillar.
